Several weeks ago I had the awe-inspiring experience of photographing the wedding of two of the most amazing ladies I have ever met. Crystal and Erin share a love that is so obvious, amazing and contagious that I only wish most people could experience a small piece of it. They chose to get married at a place near and dear to their hearts, Lovers Point in Monterey. For those of you who do not know the area, this is a small peninsula public park.
I remember thinking how brave they were when they told me they were going to get married in such a public setting. I will admit that as we neared the reception site that day, I worried that someone might just be inconsiderate enough to cause a scene. As the ceremony began the sightseers in the park began to take notice, many stopped in their tracks trying to figure out why two beautiful women in wedding gowns were at the altar.
As I stood at the back of the aisle taking photos I heard some bewildered whispers “where are the grooms”, “is this some sort of stunt”. However, as Crystal and Erin began reading their very personal wedding vows to each other a transformation came over everyone witnessing this event. Crystal began to cry, Erin also sprung a leak and the tears of joy and emotion began to spread through the wedding crowd like the wave at a sporting event……….that is when I noticed the onlookers, complete strangers pulling out tissues.
Random people in the park feeling the raw emotion of their love radiating through the air also began to cry, men and women! I am not ashamed to say that I too began to well up, it was as if the Universe stopped in that moment, gave pause to the amazing love that can be when two people, despite many oppositions, decide to power through and find their way. I cannot even begin to express how honored I feel that these ladies chose me to be a part of their day and prove to me beyond a doubt that LOVE IS LOVE, no matter your gender.
